Sparisoma cretense
The Mediterranean Parrotfish is one of the most colourful, unique, and recognisable fish of the regional seas. It belongs to the Scaridae family and is famous for its mouth that resembles the beak of a parrot. The body is oval, robust, and covered with large, hard cycloid scales.
The most striking characteristic involves its reverse sexual dimorphism. In contrast to most fish, where the male is the most flamboyant, the female of this species is the beauty queen. The female has an intense, bright red colour with large yellow spots behind the head and on the tail, along with a grey area on the back. The male is duller, with grey, brown, or dark olive colouration and more discreet patterns, though large dominant males can acquire impressive shades.
This is a coastal benthic species that loves warm waters. It lives mainly on rocky bottoms with rich vegetation and Posidonia seagrass meadows. It is encountered in shallow waters, usually at depths from one to 50 metres. It is very common in the Southern Aegean, particularly around Crete, the Dodecanese, and the Cyclades, and in recent years it has been spreading further north due to rising sea temperatures.
The animal is an exclusively herbivorous fish. Its teeth are fused to form four plates with two on top and two on the bottom that function like a beak. With this tool, it constantly bites and scrapes the rocks, removing seaweed and algae. As it eats, it often crushes small pieces of stone or coralline material, which pass through its digestive system and are expelled as sand, contributing to the formation of sandy seabeds.
Fisheries & Economic Value
It represents a very popular and expensive fish, especially on the islands. It is caught from the shore using nets, traps, and rods, with dough or seaweed as bait. For underwater spearfishers, it is an easy target due to its calm movement. The meat is white and sweet.
The unique gastronomic characteristic is that it is traditionally cooked and eaten uncleaned, meaning with its intestines intact, as long as it is fresh. Because it feeds only on algae, its intestines are clean and possess an intense, spicy iodine flavour that is considered an exceptional delicacy once the gallbladder is removed.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the Mediterranean Parrotfish as a species of Least Concern. Scientific studies emphasise its critical ecological role as an ecosystem engineer, as it regulates algal growth on reefs. Furthermore, research has shown that its distribution is rapidly extending northward into the Mediterranean due to climate change.
