🐟 Description & Characteristics

The Bogue is one of the most abundant and recognisable fish in the Mediterranean and belongs to the family Sparidae. Its scientific name translates to "eyes of an ox," referring to the fish's disproportionately large eyes. The body is elongated and hydrodynamic with a silvery colour that turns green on the back and features 3 to 5 characteristic golden or yellow lines running horizontally along its sides. Its large eyes are an adaptation that allows it to see and feed effectively in low-light conditions.

🌊 Habitat

This is a semi-pelagic species that forms massive and dense schools. It is extremely adaptable and can be found on rocky seabeds, in sandy areas, and in Posidonia seagrass meadows. It lives at depths from the surface down to 350 metres, though it usually stays within the first 100 metres. It exhibits strong daily migration because the schools stay deeper near the bottom during the day and move en masse toward the surface at night to feed.

🐣 Reproduction

Breeding takes place primarily in the spring from February to April or May, depending on the region. In contrast to other fish in the same family that change sex, the biology of the Bogue is more complex. While it was previously considered a typical protogynous hermaphrodite species in which individuals are born female and become male, newer research shows that, in many areas of the Mediterranean, the sexes are separate from the beginning, or that sex change does not occur in all individuals. It reaches sexual maturity when it attains a length of approximately 12 to 14 centimetres.

🎣 Fisheries & Value

It is of immense fisheries importance due to its abundance, but it has relatively low commercial value. It is caught in large quantities with bottom trawls and purse seines. It is a popular target for recreational anglers using handlines, and it is one of the best live baits for catching large predators such as common dentex and amberjack.

🔬 Significant Research Findings

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Bogue is classified as a species of Least Concern, and its Mediterranean populations are considered stable. Scientific studies have highlighted its critical role in the ecosystem as a connector, as it transfers energy from plankton to larger predators. Furthermore, parasitology research has shown that the Bogue often carries a characteristic parasite in its mouth, which is not dangerous to humans if the fish is cooked properly.
